Über ein Netzwerk werden Verbindungen zu externen Rechnern oder Servern geschaffen, die dann entsprechende Ressourcen bereitstellen. Angebot und Nutzung erfolgen ausschließlich über technische Schnittstellen, Protokolle oder Browser. Seit der Einführung von Skype ist es eigentlich ein alter Hut, über die Cloud zu telefonieren. Doch während Privatnutzer dieses flexible und kostenlose Angebot schnell angenommen haben, taten sich Unternehmen lange Zeit schwer damit. Dies lag anfangs zum einen an Sicherheitsbedenken, die aber durch die Übernahme durch Microsoft und die damit einhergehende Einführung von Skype for Business ausgeräumt werden konnten. Das liegt vor allem daran, dass die alten ISDN- oder analogen Telefonanlagen nicht mit den technischen Neuerungen und den damit einhergehenden Features mithalten können. VoIP-Systeme erfreuen sich daher immer größerer Beliebtheit. Die Welt der IP-basierenden TK-Anlagen teilt sich im Wesentlichen in die beiden Bereiche IP-Centrex und IP-PBX auf. Bei Letzterem ist sowohl ein gehosteter Betrieb als auch der Eigenbetrieb im Unternehmen möglich.
