Während VDSL/VDSL2 aus Kupferkabeln und DOCSIS 3.0/3.1 aus Koaxialkabeln mit aufwendigen Tricks die letzten Kapazitätsreserven herauskitzeln, transportieren Lichtwellenleiter schon heute mühelos Geschwindigkeiten bis zu 1 Gigabit und mehr pro Sekunde bis zum Teilnehmer. Wenn Kopfstationen und Modems in Zukunft mit erheblich stärkeren Prozessoren ausgestattet werden, dürften Glasfasern Kapazitätsreserven bis in den Terabit-Bereich (1000 Gigabit/s) bieten. Ein sehr guter Grund, um den Ausbau voranzutreiben. Vermutlich werden sie ein paar Stoßgebete Richtung Himmel senden mit der dringenden Bitte, dass der Ausfall möglichst kurz sein möge. Denn die Folgen sind wesentlich weitreichender, als man im ersten Moment vermuten könnte. E-Mails empfangen oder versenden? Fehlanzeige. Auf dem Server in der Cloud arbeiten? Wird nicht klappen. Und wenn der Telefonanschluss bereits auf All-IP (Abschaltung bis Ende 2018!) umgestellt ist, wird das Telefon ebenfalls den Dienst verweigern. Surfen im Internet? Sowieso unmöglich.
