Während VDSL/VDSL2 aus Kupferkabeln und DOCSIS 3.0/3.1 aus Koaxialkabeln mit aufwendigen Tricks die letzten Kapazitätsreserven herauskitzeln, transportieren Lichtwellenleiter schon heute mühelos Geschwindigkeiten bis zu 1 Gigabit und mehr pro Sekunde bis zum Teilnehmer. Wenn Kopfstationen und Modems in Zukunft mit erheblich stärkeren Prozessoren ausgestattet werden, dürften Glasfasern Kapazitätsreserven bis in den Terabit-Bereich (1000 Gigabit/s) bieten.
